A natural resource for all of the community to enjoy
History of the Woodlands
and the Project
Originally managed by the Forestry Commission, Long Wood was purchased on behalf of the community using a grant from the National Lottery Community Asset Transfer Fund. The funding also paid for some revenue costs whilst the Long Wood project experimented with different potential revenue streams, Now out of the funded period, Long Wood Community Woodland continues to provide recreational facilities for the community as well as develop natural broadleaved cover and the thriving ecosystems that this will provide. The commercial activities at Long wood allow further development of these ecosystems including the addition of ponds and wetland habitats to increase the biodiversity on site and the ecosystem services that they provide.
A community co-operative since 2003
10,000 Trees planted since 2007
Over 15kms of footpaths and bridleways
Self sustaining through timber and firewood business
Largest community woodland in Wales
Long Wood aims to contribute to locally resilient communities by bringing together the social, economic and ecological aspects of the area.
