Longwood Community Woodland recently welcomed the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Forest Regulation and Tree Health Team for a site visit and meeting. The visit gave us an opportunity to showcase our approach to sustainable woodland management, biodiversity enhancement, and local timber processing.

During their visit, the team joined us for a guided tour of the woodland. We shared examples of the work taking place across the site and explained how we balance active forestry with the needs of wildlife and the wider environment.

A Closer Look at Sustainable Forestry

The tour gave us an opportunity to highlight the low-impact forestry methods we use throughout the woodland. Our team works with nature rather than against it. Every management decision aims to improve woodland health while supporting biodiversity.

The NRW team saw how we protect sensitive habitats and retain important woodland features. They also learned how we encourage natural regeneration and create diverse woodland structures that benefit a wide range of species.

As a result, we can produce sustainable timber while maintaining the ecological value of the woodland.

From Woodland to Workshop

One of the highlights of the visit was a stop at our sawmill. Here, the team met Jamie from Ty Pren, who discussed how locally sourced timber from Longwood is processed and used within his business.

Jamie shared an example of how Longwood timber is transformed into a finished product. He explained how Ty Pren uses timber in the round, making use of the natural shape and strength of the tree. This approach reduces waste by minimising cutting and milling. It also creates stronger structures that benefit from the timber’s natural form.

The discussion highlighted the value of processing timber close to where it is grown. Keeping the supply chain local supports rural businesses, reduces transport distances, and makes the most of a renewable resource.

By seeing how Longwood timber is used in practice, the team gained a better understanding of the link between sustainable woodland management and high-value timber products.

Supporting Tree Health and Biodiversity

Tree health and biodiversity play a key role in everything we do at Longwood. We manage the woodland in a way that supports healthy trees, thriving habitats, and long-term resilience.

Our forestry work protects valuable wildlife areas and maintains a varied woodland structure. This creates opportunities for plants, insects, birds, and mammals to flourish alongside responsible timber production.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss current tree health challenges and the importance of sustainable woodland management across Wales.

Working Together for Wales’ Woodlands

We were pleased to welcome the NRW Forest Regulation and Tree Health Team to Longwood Community Woodland. Visits like these help share knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and promote good practice across the forestry sector.

By working together, we can help create healthy, resilient woodlands that support both people and nature for generations to come.
