Last week, our team harvested a selection of Douglas fir trees that had reached the right stage for processing at our sawmill. Through sustainable timber harvesting, we help maintain a healthy woodland while producing high-quality timber for a range of uses.
Managing Our Woodland Responsibly
At Longwood, we take a careful approach to woodland management. Instead of relying solely on large harvesting machinery, our team uses motor-manual harvesting techniques to reduce the impact on the woodland.
This method allows us to select and harvest individual trees with greater precision. As a result, we minimise soil disturbance, protect younger trees and preserve important habitats for wildlife. By taking this approach, we can continue to manage the woodland responsibly while maintaining its natural character.
Why We Harvest Trees
Sustainable timber harvesting plays an important role in a healthy woodland. As trees grow, they begin to compete with each other for space, sunlight and nutrients. Through a process known as thinning, we carefully remove selected trees to give the remaining ones more room to grow. This is the first thinning operation in this block, and it will help the remaining trees put on more size, improve in quality and continue developing into a strong, productive woodland.
This ongoing cycle of planting, growing and harvesting helps us maintain a productive and resilient woodland. It also provides a renewable source of timber that supports local industries and reduces reliance on imported materials.
From Tree to Timber
After harvesting the trees, we transport them to our sawmill for processing. There, we convert the timber into high-quality products for a variety of applications.
